Despite significant achievements in the automated analysis of phytoplankton images, phytoplankton monitoring workflows still involve several manual steps for data processing and validation. AIES-PHY technology addresses this challenge by developing a semi-automated pipeline for the extraction, processing, and classification of phytoplankton images obtained with the flow cytometer CytoSense (Cytobuoy). The system streamlines the workflow by automatically extracting images from raw CytoSense files and retrieving associated sampling metadata. The pipeline uses convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for the image classification and uploads the classified images with their associated metadata to EcoTaxa. In Ecotaxa images are validated by a taxonomist. AIES-PHY enables the retrieval and preparation of validated data for publication, along with visualization through an interactive dashboard.
